Metropolis is an amazing movie about robots and gunslingers and bird men, it's available at nearly any video store, and no knowledge of Tezuka is required.
I can describe more if needed.

? Yeow! Are all of these images from the animated production in question, or are they your interpretations of it? Could you provide a small teaser about the plot?

Panels 2-4 and 7 are from the movie. Panel 6 is from an older show called "Marine Express", yet the character [Skunk Kusai] was in Metropolis. Everything else is my crap.

The summary? There is a grand city that has just built an enormous tower called the Ziggurat. A man named Duke Red is slowly taking power of the city with his adopted son Rock running an army made to keep robots as servants. A detective named Shunsaku Ban and his nephew Kenichi come looking for an organ smuggler/roboticist when the smuggler's lab burns down, leaving behind a mysterious robot girl named Tima who was based on Duke Red's dead daughter. Kenichi is stranded with Tima while Rock is trying to find Tima and destroy her.

Watch it in Japanese with subtitles. Not because you'll look smart, but the American dub is full of swears.

I didn't really care much for that movie, the manga on the other hand was a lot more enjoyable in my opinion.

I own the manga too, and I found it a little more light-hearted than the movie. Also, Michi is cool.
